Great Tips for Updating Your Bedroom

By Lily Olson

Summer vacation is a great time for new beginnings and fresh perspectives. One of the things I like to do once in a while is move around things in my room or redecorate. This time around I decided to go to the experts for inspiration — Brad and Heather Fox, hosts of the new HGTV show Stay or Sell. The Foxes own Fox Homes, a realty design firm in Minneapolis.

For the pilot of Stay or Sell, Heather and Brad redesigned a home in St. Louis Park, Minn. “We kind of just jumped in,” Heather says. “We had to work faster than normal for HGTV’s timeline, so we just kept working and moving forward without thinking too much about the cameras.” The pilot will air again on August 4 at 1 p.m. CST—if they get enough viewers, the show could get picked up for a full series.

In addition to doing TV, designing and selling homes, the Foxes are parents of two young boys who are very excited about the show.

I asked Heather to share some of her favorite tips for updating teen bedrooms—whether you want to “stay” and make small improvements or “sell” and start from scratch!

Stay

Make a plan.

Spend some time on Pinterest finding some inspiration images. “I would never suggest copying an image, but take inspiration and get some good ideas,” Heather says.

Paint can change an entire space.

Be sure to ask your parent’s permission, but a color change on even just one wall can make a world of difference. This could be a fun project to do with Mom or Dad, Heather says. Removable wallpaper is also awesome! Try focusing on the wall behind your bed and make a big impact. Check out Target and chasingpaper.com.

Shop for new bedding (on a budget!).

New bedding to match that newly painted wall is an easy update. Heather is loving the new Opalhouse line at Target. Great colors, fun patterns, and inexpensive.

Don’t be afraid of thrift shopping.

“I’ve found the most beautiful art and accessories at thrift stores, and it’s fun to go through all the junk. Have fun with it,” says Heather. “I feel like your bedroom should represent you. Don’t worry about what other people like, do what you like!”

Sell

Find your inspiration and know what you want.

Pinterest will be your friend! And speaking of friends, get your friends involved! Maybe they can’t re-design their own room, but would likely have a blast helping you.

Get inspired on your summer trip.

Heather says she finds most of her inspiration when she travels. Different places have different styles so if you have an extra 5 minutes, pop into a hotel or restaurant to see what’s new.

Get social!

Instagram is a great resource. Some of Heather’s favorite Instagrammers who inspire her are: Amber interiors (@amberinteriors) , Studio McGee (@studiomcgee), Sarah Sherman Samuel (@sarahshermansamuel) and lastly, Kelly Wearstler (@shopkwearstler). You can also follow Heather and Brad (@foxhomesmn).

Thanks to Heather and Stay or Sell, I’ve now got a great new show to watch for inspiration!
